1
GR Τολμᾷ τις ὑμῶν πρᾶγμα ἔχων πρὸς τὸν ἕτερον κρίνεσθαι ἐπὶ τῶν ἀδίκων, καὶ οὐχὶ ἐπὶ τῶν ἁγίων;
LA Audet aliquis vestrum habens negotium adversus alterum, judicari apud iniquos, et non apud sanctos?
EN Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to be judged before the unjust: and not before the saints?
^1
2
GR ἢ οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι οἱ ἅγιοι τὸν κόσμον κρινοῦσιν; καὶ εἰ ἐν ὑμῖν κρίνεται ὁ κόσμος, ἀνάξιοί ἐστε κριτηρίων ἐλαχίστων;
EN Know you not that the saints shall judge this world? And if the world shall be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
^2
3
GR οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι ἀγγέλους κρινοῦμεν, μήτιγε βιωτικά;
LA Nescitis quoniam angelos judicabimus? quanto magis sæcularia?
EN Know you not that we shall judge angels? How much more things of this world?
^3
4
GR βιωτικὰ μὲν οὖν κριτήρια ἐὰν ἔχητε, τοὺς ἐξουθενημένους ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ τούτους καθίζετε;
EN If therefore you have judgments of things pertaining to this world, set them to judge who are the most despised in the church.
^4
5
GR πρὸς ἐντροπὴν ὑμῖν λέγω. οὕτως οὐκ ἔνι ἐν ὑμῖν οὐδεὶς σοφὸς ὃς δυνήσεται διακρῖναι ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ;
EN I speak to your shame. Is it so that there is not among you any one wise man that is able to judge between his brethren?
^5
6
GR ἀλλὰ ἀδελφὸς μετὰ ἀδελφοῦ κρίνεται, καὶ τοῦτο ἐπὶ ἀπίστων;
EN But brother goes to law with brother: and that before unbelievers.
^6
7
GR ἤδη μὲν οὖν ὅλως ἥττημα ὑμῖν ἐστιν, ὅτι κρίματα ἔχετε μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν. διὰ τί οὐχὶ μᾶλλον ἀδικεῖσθε; διὰ τί οὐχὶ μᾶλλον ἀποστερεῖσθε;
EN Already indeed there is plainly a fault among you, that you have law suits one with another. Why do you not rather take wrong? Why do you not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?
^7
[!note]- A fault…
Lawsuits can hardly ever be without a fault, on the one side or the other; and oftentimes on both sides.
8
EN But you do wrong and defraud: and that to your brethren.
^8
9
LA An nescitis quia iniqui regnum Dei non possidebunt? Nolite errare: neque fornicarii, neque idolis servientes, neque adulteri,
EN Know you not that the unjust shall not possess the kingdom of God? Do not err: Neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers:
^9
10
LA neque molles, neque masculorum concubitores, neque fures, neque avari, neque ebriosi, neque maledici, neque rapaces regnum Dei possidebunt.
EN Nor the effeminate nor liers with mankind nor thieves nor covetous nor drunkards nor railers nor extortioners shall possess the kingdom of God.
^10
11
EN And such some of you were. But you are washed: but you are sanctified: but you are justified: in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Spirit of our God.
^11
12
EN All things are lawful to me: but all things are not expedient. All things are lawful to me: but I will not be brought under the power of any.
^12
13
EN Meat for the belly and the belly for the meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. But the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord: and the Lord for the body.
^13
14
EN Now God has raised up the Lord and will raise us up also by his power.
^14
15
Tollens ergo membra Christi, faciam membra meretricis? Absit.
EN Know you not that your bodies are the members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid!
^15
16
LA An nescitis quoniam qui adhæret meretrici, unum corpus efficitur? Erunt enim (inquit) duo in carne una.
EN Or know you not that he who is joined to a harlot is made one body? For they shall be, says he, two in one flesh.
^16
17
EN But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit.
^17
18
Every sin that a man does is without the body: but he that commits fornication sins against his own body.
^18
19
GR ἢ οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι τὸ σῶμα ὑμῶν ναὸς τοῦ ἐν ὑμῖν ἁγίου πνεύματός ἐστιν, οὗ ἔχετε ἀπὸ θεοῦ, καὶ οὐκ ἐστὲ ἑαυτῶν;
LA An nescitis quoniam membra vestra, templum sunt Spiritus Sancti, qui in vobis est, quem habetis a Deo, et non estis vestri?
EN Or know you not that your members are the temple of the Holy Ghost, who is in you, whom you have from God: and you are not your own?
^19
20
LA Empti enim estis pretio magno. Glorificate, et portate Deum in corpore vestro.
EN For you are bought with a great price. Glorify and bear God in your body.
^20
[!note]- All things are lawful, etc…
That is, all indifferent things are indeed lawful, inasmuch as they are not prohibited; but oftentimes they are not expedient; as in the case of lawsuits, etc. And much less would it be expedient to be enslaved by an irregular affection to any thing, how indifferent soever.
